This is Rod Smith, he needs your help.

He's been a member of the Labour Party for over 40 years.  During that time, he's  held most senior positions at Branch and CLP level. We need to mount a legal challenge against the flagrant rule breaking in the recent branch AGM's.

Why we need your support

A well respected member of the community in St. Leonard’s ward, Rod is also a bit of a local political historian – there’s nothing about the history of Streatham CLP that Rod doesn’t know.   Rod is typical of the committed activists and trade unionists within the Labour Party.  He’s passionate about challenging inequality, improving the rights of workers and helping to lift communities out of poverty.  He’s pounded the streets, knocked on doors and actively recruited members into the Party and the trade unions.

Last month, Rod stood for election as a GC delegate in the St. Leonard’s ward AGM.  The online meeting and voting was controlled by the CLP Secretary.  Although Anonyvoter was used, the election results that were declared by the CLP Secretary bear absolutely no resemblance to the verified results produced by Anonyvoter.  According to Anonyvoter, Rod and several other colleagues were elected.  But the CLP Secretary has declared a completely different set of results, which has disenfranchised Rod and others.

The discrepancies don’t end there.  Complaints have been made to the CLP Secretary and the Head of Disputes at Labour HQ, but these complaints have been ignored.

We don’t think that the way Rod has been treated is fair.  We also believe that if the Labour Party Rule Book can be breached and ignored in this way by the CLP Secretary and the Party itself, the rules are effectively meaningless and we cannot rely on the Party machinery to uphold the rights of members who are the lifeblood of the party.

That’s why we’re seeking your support to amount a legal challenge against the CLP Secretary and the Labour Party.  Our challenge is about ensuring democracy, transparency and accountability within the Labour Party.  The rules are there for a reason and no-one should be allowed to abuse their position within the Party to exclude, discriminate or manipulate our processes.

If it can happen to someone as committed and long-serving as Rod, it can happen to anyone.

Please donate whatever you can and defend democracy within the Labour Party.

The funds will be used in pursuit of Rod’s campaign. In the unlikely event of any excess funds, these will be diverted to similar campaigns as defined by Rod
