The sudden death of Senseless Things' frontman Mark Keds, age 50, on January 11th left his partner of 7 years and their beloved 3 cats with the prospect of imminent homelessness as a consequence of the unfair and outdated laws of intestacy. The couple had been in love and co-habiting for seven years when Mark finally succumbed to a long battle with COPD. For the last three years of their life together, she was also his caregiver as he struggled with COPD, sometimes to the extent of being bedridden for months at a time.

Perhaps most tragic of all is that Mark's death in January was unexpected due to what looked to be a partial alleviation of his symptoms in the recent past; in fact the two had recently decided to try to start a family, and for that purpose had begun viewing larger homes just a month before his death, in hopes of finding a flat more suitable for children.

Now, within a week of Mark's funeral, Natanya is being pressured to leave the flat and threatened with legal action. Natanya is already devastated over having lost Mark, and is too occupied in having to settle other loose ends stemming from his death to deal with this astonishing attempt to dislodge her and Mark's pets. So several of us are stepping in to help her raise the money for a lawyer. We need help to pay legal fees to allow Natanya to keep her home, a right she appears to have under the 1975 Inheritance Act.

We are seeking £1400 to cover the first stage of the legal battle.

Thanks for your help, we really appreciate it.

Next stage of the process

We have had a very promising meeting with our lawyer and we are going to progress to the next stage of the case. Because we have not had a substantive response from the other party we have no choice but to issue court proceedings. We will need your help.

Update 2

The meeting with the lawyer went well.

We have now instructed our solicitors to help Natanya safeguard her legal rights. The meeting was very positive and all donations are going straight to HJA to extend the amount of work that they can do.

Congratulations everyone!

In what is possibly record time we reached our pledge target £1,400 in 4h 20min; this will enable us to complete the first legal stage. I will update this page after we have had our consultation with the lawyer. We now need to keep fundraising for the stretch target; all donations go directly to our HJA lawyer. Thanks so much to everyone for your messages of support and your contributions; it means so much to Natanya and the cats, and beyond that, will help us to bring attention to the outdated legal framework that continues to put bereaved partners in the position of having to fight for their basic rights in the wake of the loss of those they loved most.
