I am in my mid to late forties working for a Higher Education Institution. I was overlooked for a senior role promotion because of my disability.

Who am I?

I am working as a manager for over 10 years for one of the top Business Schools (a provider for MBA programmes) in the UK. My employer has rarely been out of the top 3 or 5 Business Schools Financial Times rankings in the world.

My story

I suffer from a red blood medical condition known as Sickle Cell Disorder (SCD).  I was born with this condition and suffer from anaemia and episodes of severe pain. These painful episodes are referred to as sickle cell crisis and is serious but can be managed through treatment.  

It is very challenging living with SCD as I have to take medication every day and manage my daily activities and stress levels. 

I was overlooked for a promotion because I suffer from Sickle Cell. Now I'm taking legal action to hold my employer to account and to make sure this injustice doesn't happen again to other employees with a disability.

For the Sickle Cell community

Sickle Cell patients suffer in silence as we are marginalised due to the misconception and misunderstanding of the disorder. This condition can affect anyone but predominately affects people from African and Caribbean background. There is approximately 15,000 people in the UK living with this condition and I am one of those statistics.  

I am bringing this legal action to bring awareness of sickle cell disorder and the misapprehensions about the condition. I was not given the opportunity for promotion as my employer did not understand this condition.  Employers should not assume that because an employee has a disability they are not capable of higher management roles or achieving success in their career.

Case background

I have been working with a colleague in my team. He joined three years ago and we are both managers. I was working in the role for 7 years without a promotion. 

In February 2019, I learnt that my colleague had been promoted to senior manager. This opportunity was not offered to me. My employer explained that they did not give me the opportunity to expand my skills and responsibility because I have sickle cell. 

I am sad that I was overlooked for a promotion because I have a disability. 

I am bringing an employment tribunal claim against my employer as no one should be denied opportunities to progress their career because they have a disability.

How much do I need and why?

I need to raise initially £5,000 to help pay for my legal fees to pursue justice. I want to fight for a successful outcome to help other people who are facing the same issues. I firmly believe my case will make a difference and will set a precedent so I need to make it count and with your financial contribution we can all make a change for those living with sickle cell in employment.
