Who are we?

We are the Service users, Carers, family and friends of the Fairway Day Centre. We are campaigning to keep this crucial Day Centre open.

The proposed closure of Fairway Day Centre by Birmingham City Council will mean the loss of a vital lifeline to persons with physical and mental disabilities & older persons. Please join us in our legal challenge, contribute what you can but most importantly share this page with your friends and family.

Case Background

The Fairway Day Centre in Kings Norton provides a crucial service to over 50 persons with a variety of disabilities, their carers and families.

The threat of closure has been hanging over the centre since September 2017 when the council first suggested that the centre may be closing. Since that time we have started a campaign group to save Fairway Day Centre, written to the council numerous time about the lack of consultation, organised a petition with over three thousand signatures as well as gaining the support of the area MP and local Councillors.

We are continuing our fight and one of the users of Fairway has launched a legal challenge on the basis that there was no lawful consultation in respect of the decision to close Fairway Day Centre

It's simple: the people who love the Fairway Centre have not been listened to. This is against the law and we intend to hold the council to account.

Some of the service users have been attending Fairway Day Centre for over twenty years. The Centre has become a treasured community of valued friendships and specialised activities.

For the carers the centre provides respite care where our loved ones are cared for by familar staff in a safe environment, where they are with friends.

Next Steps

The next step in the case is to file an urgent court application against Birmingham City Council to prevent the imminent closure of Fairway Day Centre and to seek a judicial review on the matter.

How much are we raising and why?

One of the users of Fairway – who wishes to remain anonymous – has been able to secure legal aid funding but ONLY if they are able to raise £5,000. Nobody involved in the campaign to save Fairway has that kind of money so we need to come together to support the case.

We can't do this without your help. We need to raise a minimum of £2,500 as an initial target but ultimately we want to £5,000 to enable us to take this through to its conclusion and hold the council to account.

You Can't Hide from Us Birmingham City Council Social Care Department

On 20 Nov 2018, the Birmingham City Scrutiny Committee was due to review the actions of the Health & Social Care department as it relates to dealing with adult day centres such as Fairway Day Centre. However in a last minute change the Health & Care Department was a 'no-show' as they went into hiding.

Their actions are typical of the disrespect they have demonstrated throughout the whole process of closing our beloved day centre. Their lack of communication and transparency has caused a high level of distrust and it is disheartening that after 14 months of this struggle to save Fairway Day Centre their behaviour has not improved.

We will not allow Birmingham City Health & Social Care department to get away with treating vulnerable persons with such disrespect and our legal battle and your support is increasingly important.

With much thanks, Wendy Collymore

Chairperson the Campaign to Save Fairway Day Centre

We wanted to share some great news: On 1 November 2018 our lawyers secured an Interim Order in the High Court which temporarily prevents Birmingham City Council from progressing their plans to close Fairway Day Centre.

This is an excellent initial result and we would like to Thank You for supporting us. As we continue to fight to keep this vital facility open we hope you will continue to support us and share our legal fund raising efforts with your friends and family.
