Defending a Community Resource - Stop the Sale of Southall Town Hall

Ealing Council have made a decision to sell Southall Town Hall, one of Southall’s last remaining public buildings.

It is the home of over 15 businesses and community organisations including the Southall Community Alliance and the Southall Legal Centre and used by thousands of people. We need your support to challenge the decision to dispose of the Town Hall in the courts.

'We are battling to keep Southall Town Hall open for all residents and groups. Ealing Council do not have to sell this iconic building and we will campaign to make sure it remains our main civic building.'  Janpal Basran, Southall Community Alliance

There has been little consultation with users or members of the public.

The Town Hall is used by over 10,000 residents annually, many of whom have language difficulties or face major problems accessing advice, housing or employment.

Local community organisations and small businesses use this building and it will affect their survival and reduce the already very limited support available to working class people of all ethnic and faith backgrounds.

We are opposed to plans that stop Southall Town Hall being open to all sections of our diverse local community.

Tenants and users of the Town Hall have set up the ‘Save Southall Town Hall Campaign’, which believes the building can be run without reliance upon Ealing Council funds.

Despite its diversity the council have failed in its duties to run and engage with an Equality Impact Assessment.

Why are we raising money?

We are fundraising to build legal funds to bring a Judicial Review against the unlawful decision of the London Borough of Ealing.

Permission hearing.

We want to say a big THANK YOU for your support in our case. Outlined below is an outline of where the case is at, and to ask for a small favour.

Permission Hearing.

On Wednesday 18th April 2018 at 10.00am in the Royal Courts of Justice the case against Ealing council will begin.

The hearing is an oral permisison hearing which will last approximately one hour.

The Claimants will have the opportunity to present their case to the Court. We hope to convince the court that:

1. the Defendant failed to decide the purpose of sail and future use of the building.

2. the consultation process was defective

3. the Equalities Impact Assessment was unlawful.

We hope to convince the Court that the matter should proceed to a full hearing - Hopefully before August 2018.

A small favour to ask

We need to raise a further £2000. We have already raised just over £3000.

Can you e-mail  5 of your friends to make a donation?  - any amount will help.

Can you tweet your support of the case with a link to the crowdfund page?

Can you please post on Facebook?

Can you possibly make another small donation to move our the amount we have raised cloase to the target.

BIG BIG THANKS AGAIN!
