My name is Steve Geliot,

Summary - Last year I noticed a serious problem with light pollution in The South Downs National Park emanating from the Amex football stadium at Falmer. They use a very bright lighting rig to make the grass grow. My photographs showed that  there is more light pollution coming from this stadium than from the entire city of Brighton and Hive. I launched a petition on change.org and was amazed, and deeply moved to get nearly twelve thousand signatures in just a few weeks. Clearly I am not the only one who regards the quiet enjoyment of a starry sky to be an ancient human right. Having read many research papers, I have become deeply concerned about the harm this light pollution does to wildlife and to human health. When I looked into the problem using data from a NASA satellite, I discovered that in 2016 most premier league clubs brought in similar lighting rigs, adding more light pollution across the England than twenty cities the size of Brighton and Hove. No local authority planning officer or environmental health team did a single thing to control or mitigate it. There were no environmental assessments or planning applications. Now horticulture is beginning to use more and more similarly polluting light systems. We are on the way to losing our night skies altogether. Most people don't realise quite how serious a problem it is, but the science is compelling, for example data shows that are losing insects at a terrifying rate because of this artificial light.

Call to action - We need your support: please contribute and share this page now! We are raising £5,000 to get a judicial review on the local authority decision not to call these polluting lighting rigs in for planning.

What are we trying to achieve? -  If we win, all of these massive lighting rigs, whether we are talking about football or horticulture, will require planning permission, at which point the appropriate controls and mitigations such as timers and shielding can be set. A win will remove this insanely bright light pollution from our skies. We do not want to stop people playing and enjoying football. It will be perfectly possible to light the grass during controlled daylight and evening hours, without causing all this unnecessary damage by spilling vast amounts of light into the night sky.

What is the next step in the case? - We need a judicial review in the High Court in order to clarify the law and get our local authorities to apply the right checks and balances.

How much we are raising and why? - We have set a target of £5,000 which is a good estimate of what this would cost if we lose. If we win, then the other side would pay the costs.

If you are able to help, you will be winning back the stars, so thank you. That would be a legacy to be proud of, and millions of people would benefit from it.

Only just seen this and think we should next work on shops and other displays that run all night. We don’t need them either! Just think how much money would be saved by all these companies and how much cleaner our earth would be. Keep up the good work Steve.

There's no justification for polluting in this way. It's just football, people love it but it's still just football.

The care of the environment has to be the councils first priority. We are at a critical time for the planet. These lights are having a huge effect on wildlife over a huge area. All ecosystems are entertained so we cannot afford to turn a blind eye to this...

An Unexpected Visitor.

Comet C 2020 F3 NEOWISE was only first spotted on March 27th by by NASA’s Near-Earth Object Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer. Here it is over the Cuckmere at High and Over, visible for several more nights to come, and currently getting brighter.  Imagine if this spectacular event had occurred in winter and the night sky was muddied out by light pollution from the Amex Stadium grass pitch lighting rig. The whole experience would be spoiled. Please help me with my case to get these insanely polluting light rigs under control. Thank you for your amazing help so far!
