Who Am I?

My name is Abdul Hakim Hanafi. I’ve been driving London buses since 2003 and work for a union, fighting to protect the rights of my fellow drivers.

The case

This case is about protecting bus drivers across London from employers who are flouting the law. Hardworking bus drivers, public servants who are responsible for transporting millions of people around the city every day, are at the mercy of unscrupulous employers who can transfer them from route to route as a way of getting rid of bus drivers who stand up for their working rights. This is what happened to me, but I'm not alone.

I need your support to let them know they can’t treat their workers like this - please donate to my legal fund now.

I believe all bus drivers should be protected at work and that’s why I became a union rep, fulfilling multiple roles as a deputy convenor, health and safety rep and shop steward. My employer must have been sick of seeing me in so many meetings sticking up for my colleagues so they worked out a way to get rid of me: they transferred me onto a different route that was about to be contracted out to another company.

That was the easiest way they could get rid of me and to stop me fighting for my colleagues' rights.=

Why does it matter?

This isn’t about me - it’s about all bus drivers across the city and the country who are at the mercy of employers who can move them around from route to route with no reason. When this happens, it is a life-changing experience. For example, imagine the disruption to your life if you worked at the same place for seven years, fifteen minutes walk from your house and then overnight your place of work was moved two hours travel time across the city.

This is happening every day and the companies that run the routes don’t care.

This case is about standing up to them and standing up for all bus drivers. There are many other cases like this. I hope this case gives inspiration to other drivers to not take this lying down.

How much am I raising and why?

I am raising money to support my case against my employers for discrimination. I can’t afford to do this without this money.

Stage One - I am going to raise £2k to cover solicitors fees incurred so far to get my case against my employer ready for hearing.

Stage Two - I am raising another £10k to support the full case to its conclusion

I will keep you updated with how the money will be used throughout my campaign.

Please contribute now and share this page on your Whats App groups, Twitter and FaceBook. This really isn’t about only me - it’s about all bus drivers and I really appreciate your support.
