We need your help with legal costs, should the Secretary of State for Transport approve Gatwick Airport’s plans for a second runway.

Who are we? - CAGNE is your umbrella aviation community and environment group for Sussex, Surrey, and Kent. Earlier this year, we successfully convinced the Planning Inspectorate to oppose a new runway at Gatwick Airport, but the Secretary of State decided otherwise with ‘minded to approve’.

Summary - With our award-winning legal team and qualified team of experts, CAGNE led the way in opposing Gatwick’s plans. Throughout the planning hearings, our team held Gatwick's team accountable like never before - over noise, lack of surface transport, inadequate wastewater treatment capacity, decline in air quality, and - most importantly - the impact of another runway on our planet!

However, it is up to the Secretary of State for Transport (SoS) to make the final decision (by 27th October) – and she has already said that she is “minded to approve” the new runway. If the SoS says 'yes’, our team is ready to serve a Judicial Review (JR), but we need your help with further funding.

Call to action - Residents have already raised considerable funds, and we now ask you to put your hands in your pockets again, as we prepare to serve a Judicial Review. Whatever you can afford will help. There are many flaws in Gatwick’s case for a new runway - and we already know them, as already explained to the Planning Inspectorate through robust reports by our qualified experts.

What are we trying to achieve? - A second runway at Gatwick would cost us all dearly. Having this new runway turned down would be a major win for the planet, the environment, and the residents of Sussex, Surrey, and Kent.

What is the next step in the case? - We already have the best expert and legal teams. Should a Judicial Review become necessary, they will need more support with funding. This will ensure that our arguments are as robust as possible – against a government that is ignoring the bigger issues of climate change and a lack of public funding to support such massive growth of a West Sussex airport.

How much are we raising and why? - Initially, we must raise £25,000 to help our legal team prepare. Once the JR is accepted, we will need to raise a total of £75,000 to fight the case. We have a donor who will meet any costs over £75,000 that we have to pay.
