Feedback is seeking a judicial review of the UK government’s outrageous decision to scrap its plans to introduce mandatory food waste reporting for big food businesses.

We need your help to fund this legal action.

What’s the problem?

Food waste is not only a huge waste of water and natural resources, it causes about 10% of global emissions, driving the climate crisis and threatening our ability to meet crucial climate targets. This collossal waste is a scandal, especially while so many people are going hungry.

In the UK, some 10.4 to 13 million tonnes of food are wasted annually, equivalent to up to one-third of the country's 40 million tonnes of yearly food imports. Halving UK food waste would save close to 1 million hectares of cropland domestically and overseas which could produce enough potatoes and peas to feed 28% of the UK's population their yearly calories.

In the UK, almost half the food wasted comes from businesses. But right now, businesses are keeping us in the dark about how much food they waste.

To tackle this industry problem, the government pledged to introduce a groundbreaking new food waste law to make businesses measure and publish their food waste. This would be a BIG DEAL – causing a revolution in food waste transparency and setting a template for the world to follow.

But disgracefully, the government has caved to powerful business interests and scrapped plans for this vital law. This decision goes against the advice of the government’s own waste and climate experts, it ignores the wishes of 99% of people who responded to the consultation, and it has huge repercussions for our planet.

How can you help?

We are outraged at the government’s decision to scrap this historic food waste law - so we’re taking legal action. But we need your support to be able to fund it.

Please donate now and share this appeal! We are extremely grateful for your support.

Many thanks from us all at Feedback.
