I am Emily's mum. My world was turned upside down on 2/5/2015 when I had news my daughter (aged 14) had died as a result of a speedboat incident.

Who am I?

My name is Deborah. My 14-year-old daughter, Emily, died as a result of a speedboat incident in Brixham in May 2015. The inquest recorded a narrative verdict. I am looking to pursue a civil prosecution of the driver and owner of the speedboat.

I need your help to bring to justice those people responsible for Emily's death. I can't do this on my own and so please contribute what you can and share this page to spread the word.

Background

After Emily died, there was a 2 day inquest  - the coroner in Torquay recorded a narrative verdict. No criminal prosecution could be proven, as we discovered that there are no laws in the UK at sea for leisure craft fatalities (privately owned).

I have campaigned to raise awareness of safety at sea called Emily's Code, and RYA are supporting my campaign.

The legal campaign

I am fighting to bring to justice the owner and driver of the speedboat as I feel there was a lack of duty of care alongside which the catalogue of errors that contributed to loss of my daughters life (eg unsuitable life jacket).

I am presently receiving advice from an eminent lawyer, Stephen Harvey QC, as to the legal avenues open to me.

I believe that if simple basic safety steps had been followed Emily would still be alive today.

I am now a single parent, am unable to work due to sickness and mental health illness caused by the incident. My world has been turned upside down and having justice would help me get some closure.
