We are Brighton & Hove Palestine Solidarity Campaign, a local group of residents working to end our city's links to the war on Gaza. 

In October 2025, Brighton & Hove councillors voted by 36 to 5 to commission a report on the council's financial links to the war on Gaza, as the first stage in our city divesting from involvement from companies participating in genocide there. 

But the ruling Labour-only Cabinet commissioned a report on something completely different - looking at companies involved in illegal settlements in the West Bank, not the war in Gaza. 

We want answers. Is Brighton's money tied to what the UN has found to be genocide in Gaza? The council won't tell us. If Cabinet can quietly change what Council voted for, residents lose the right to know how their money is being used.

We sent a pre-action letter, and the council has now been forced to set out, in writing, why it narrowed the scope of the review. The response is extraordinary. The council has answered a serious question about genocide with an argument about footnotes. It has told us that pursuing this is not in the public interest. And it has tried to intimidate us with a £90,000 estimate of legal costs if we take the next step. This suggests they are willing to spend that much public money defending their refusal to complete the report that Full Council voted for: a report on the council's financial exposure to companies involved in the war on Gaza.

We are exploring our options for preparing a judicial review claim. That means asking a judge to rule that the council acted unlawfully and should answer the question councillors voted to ask.
