We,  The Munslow Action Group (MAG), need your help to stop an industrial chicken factory being built on the border of the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) within the conservation village of Aston Munslow and a few metres from the adjoining conservation village of Munslow.

If built, this development, which will cover an area equivalent to a full-size football pitch, will be the largest structure in this part of the beautiful Corvedale in the centre of A E Houseman country and would be plainly visible from the many footpaths in the area that are so beloved by ramblers and local residents.  It would house 72,000 chickens each 16 week growing cycle, all living in overcrowded conditions with no natural light. The air they breathe will be highly polluted with ammonia, which can damage their eyes and respiratory systems and burn their legs, chests and feet. The ammonia is then sucked out by fans into the surrounding atmosphere adding to an already growing problem of rural air pollution from intensive livestock units.

There are Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) including nationally important wild flower meadows and Ancient Woodlands (with trees over 300 years old) in close proximity to the proposed development. One of these sites is already at 150% of its Nitrogen Critical Load (i.e. 50% over the maximum permitted). Furthermore, the site is only 1km from the registered parkland of Millichope Park and its veteran trees.

The Munslow Action Group is launching this crowd funding appeal to take Shropshire Council to Judicial Review to put a stop to the development. Shropshire Council recommended acceptance of this development in contravention of National Planning guidelines and their own policies so this course of action is the only way to challenge the legality of this decision.

Shropshire Council has allowed the development of these factory units in the beautiful Shropshire Hills AONB and the recent government review HERE by Julian Glover recognised their failure in this aspect of planning by recommending that the AONB Partnership have a much greater say in these planning decisions. Needless to say, the objections by the AONB Partnership to this development were ignored by Shropshire Council.

To illustrate the extraordinary sprawl of these massive industrial animal units across Britain’s most rural regions follow the link below to CPRE’s interactive map. The data on these developments has been collated by CPRE Shropshire, Herefordshire and CPRW Powys.

CPRE/W maps and data can be found HERE

Please contribute to our Crowd Justice appeal and donate money to hold Shropshire Council to account, and STOP this inhumane monstrosity from being built in the beautiful Corvedale, through a Judicial Review, which is the sole means available to challenge the Planning Decision. We are asking help to raise £ 2000 to pay for an initial hearing. Please share  with anyone you know, who is a like minded conservationist.

If successful this will enable us to proceed to a substantive court hearing early in the new year 2020. To cover the costs of the full judicial review, the substantive hearing, we would need an additional  £12,000.

We need your help, each of you counts, have your say by making Shropshire Council see sense. Every contribution makes a difference.

Thank you very much.

WE WON!!

Great news we can now report that we have planning decision quashed.

Shropshire conceded on the major grounds of heritage.  This means that the application whilst likely to be resubmitted will have to overcome some significant hurdles second time round.

We are so grateful for your generosity in helping get us to this stage. The news on the ecological harms and harms to human health of industrial animal rearing inside enormous football stadium sized sheds is starting to percolate into the public's consciousness and legal victories like ours help push the agenda further.

We hope to have further good news to report once the council see the error of their ways....watch this space!

Reached our target

Dear Supporters,

We reached our target and are so near to reaching our stretch target.. This page stays open for just 5 more days until the 11th November so if we can reach our stretch target that would be wonderful.

The money you donated will go a significant way to funding the legal bills incurred so far. We expect to receive a date for the substantive hearing very shortly. We will keep you posted.  Many thanks and please keep the faith!
