"Hello, I'm Kathleen Ditchfield.  I spent 23 years working with people who were in need, vulnerable and had disabilities.   Work which I found deeply rewarding.   I was employed by a globally recognised London Corporation in 2021 and a year prior to this I started to experience perimenopause symptoms.  "Over 4 years ago a number of my perimenopause symptoms started impacting on my everyday life, namely my concentration and memory, sleep and caused anxiety and depression."

At the beginning of 2024, my GP signed me off on long term sick leave and after receiving the medical and therapeutic treatment I needed, I was able to return to work.  "Leading up to my sick leave and when I tried to return to work, I had to contend with discrimination, harassment, victimisation, along with my requests for reasonable adjustments, that were appropriate for me, being ignored.  Despite my efforts to resolve this internally, what I experienced from my employer had a devastating impact on my life and mental health.  Their treatment of me made my perimenopause symptoms so much worse.  If they had been balanced, listened to me and provided me with appropriate reasonable adjustments, I would have returned to work and been a productive and experienced employee.  Instead, I was pushed into a situation, where I had to protect my mental health.  Which meant I had no choice but to give notice.”   I raised a formal grievance and then decided to take legal action and submitted a number of claims to the Employment Tribunal.  To uphold my rights under the Equalities Act 2010, where menopause symptoms can amount to a disability.

There have been repeated delays and issues relating to documents needed by the Employment Tribunal, there have been 2 preliminary hearings and the final hearing has been rescheduled to a later date in November 2026.  "A year after giving notice and starting my legal case my husband was made redundant. Currently neither of us are in employment and I have used all my savings to cover my legal cost to date.  I believe in the justice of my claims, but the legal proceedings are expensive and stressful, so I would be sincerely grateful for any financial contribution and for this page to be shared far and wide."

There have been many experiences I have had with my ex-employer that have made me angry, and I have used this anger to help motivate me.  But even more so, "I have had to endure so much distress and hurt, caused by my ex-employer, while trying to cope with the most horrendous perimenopause symptoms.  I believe it is completely unacceptable that an employer inflicted so much harm and for them to have taken so much from me when I have been at my most vulnerable."

I have spent all my working life helping and supporting people to have better, safer and more secure lives.  I still believe in this and I continue to hope for this for myself.  I also believe other women (and their families) who are being adversely affected by perimenopause and menopause, and have subsequently been discriminated against, are entitled to justice and protection. "I want justice and to help bring about awareness so that what happened to me does not happen to other women."

Due to my limited finances I have been doing the majority of the basic work on my case, with a solicitor and barrister giving me legal advice and guidance.  "On the 18th May 2026 the witness statements will be exchanged.   These are extremely important documents and I need to pay for legal guidance and advice relating to them."   I need to raise approximately £3000.00 to help pay for legal costs for advice on my witness statement and to review the other witness statements when they are exchanged.  Along with legal advice and guidance to try and seek a fair and reasonable settlement.  If this case does go to hearing, I may need double this amount.   With this in mind, I will be giving regular updates on this platform to keep you informed of what is happening.

I also wish to acknowledge that you (the person reading my page) may be going through something similar yourself or know a family or women who is being adversely affected by perimenopause and menopause, and their employer is not recognising their disability and their rights under the Equalities Act.  With this in mind, please share my story and gently encourage them to seek good advice.  A good place to start is to look at the ACAS website, to talk with your Union and Occupational Health.

Finally, "to anyone who takes the time to read this, thank you.  If you choose to donate, even a small amount then I will be deeply grateful."  Any help, no matter how small or large will make a real difference.

Excellent legal update from my barrister

First, I wish to thank everyone who has donated and who has given me support and kindness in other ways. The donations have helped pay for the input, guidance and insights from my barrister, and some, but not all the work, from my solicitor.

In a nut shell, my barrister confirmed there was clear discrimination against me from my ex-employer, that they were clearly dismissive of me and the impact my disability was having on me. My barrister cautioned me that things can go differently in a hearing.  They advised me on a number of things to strengthen my case even further if this does go to a hearing. Overall, the barrister said I have a strong case and my ex-employers witness statements have a number of significant weaknesses.

The callous attitude my ex-employers had and still have toward me, or anyone else with a disability, disgusts me.  I will not let this go until they are made accountable.

My solicitor will be putting forward a settlement offer.  This will be approximately another £200 worth of work.  My Crowd Justice account will be closing in 12 days so any contribution, even a small contribution of £10 will be helpful.  Thank you all for your kindness and compassion, I am truly grateful.

The other witness statements are pathetic and full of inconsistencies

They continue to ignore or minimise my disability, even though I told them for over 2 years I was struggling with the impact my perimenopause symptoms were having on me.   There are a few extremely obvious inconsistencies in the witness statements from their line management and what these people have written in the documents complied for the court case.  From a legal point of view this is very bad for my ex-employer and only strengthens my case further.

The money that has so far been donated has paid for my solicitor and barrister to review and advice on my witness statement and has partly paid for a meeting with my barrister in June this year.  I feel so deeply grateful for these donations and honoured to have all your support.

To help keep costs down my husband will attend the meeting and take notes and I am putting together some notes for my solicitor and barrister on my ex-employer's witness statements.

But I will need more donations to help pay for the remaining cost of the meeting with my barrister, the formal settlement offer and legal advice around this.  With this in mind, if you wish to donate again, I will be profoundly grateful.  I kindly request you forward my link and story to your friends and family, and in the social media platforms you use.  I also ask that you share your own comments and views on these platforms and to write about your belief in the cause and/or your belief in me.  The more of you who add your voices, the more you help and support me.

Wow! I've been so humbled by your generosity

I wish to give everyone who has donated to me and my cause, a heart felt thank you.  You are all people I hold in my heart and I am truly grateful you are in my life.

We are almost at my first goal, there is just £130 to go in donations to get to £1000.  If I don't reach this first goal then all the money that has been donated gets returned to the people who made the donations.  Therefore it is so important we reach this first goal and there is 24 days left to achieve this.  With this in mind I am kindly asking for you all to share my link and my story with all your friends and family.  Along with posting my link and sharing what you wish to about me and my story on any of the social media platforms you use.

My barrister will be returning my draft witness statement today, with his recommendations and suggestions.  On the 18th of May all the witness statements are exchanged, I expect to receive 2 or 3 from my ex-employer.  I will share another update after the 18th, once I have had time to read through them all and I  have shared them with my solicitor (a partner at Altra Law).

Thank you all again, you lovely people xx
