A council approved a factory farm that will condemn more than two million 'Frankenchickens' a year to a life of misery – without once mentioning animal welfare.

We’re bringing a legal challenge to overturn the dreadful decision and stop this factory farm before it gets built.

This is a huge battle for millions of chicks and the principle of animal protection.

Permission to cause pain

Intensive ‘broiler’ factory farms are one of the cruellest forms of animal farming in the UK.

A new one planned for Brattleby, Lincolnshire would confine more than two million birds a year in six sheds.

Disgracefully, it would use fast-growing breeds (commonly known as ‘Frankenchickens’), who suffer immensely from their rapid weight gain. 

Frankenchickens' huge bodies are too heavy for their brittle legs. As a result, many of the birds simply cannot walk.

Countless investigations have revealed the appalling misery of life on an intensive chicken farm. In 2024, the Court of Appeal noted that raising Frankenchickens could be illegal. 

Yet, in July 2026, West Lindsey District Council approved a factory farm’s horrifying plans to raise millions more Frankenchickens.

It did so without considering animal welfare. Not once did the decision mention the welfare of the chicks who will be trapped inside these sheds.

This needs to be overturned

The prospect of so much extra suffering is hard enough to bear.

As if the immense cruelty wasn’t enough, the Council also failed to properly assess the environmental harms of this mega-development.

This means they did not have full knowledge of the emissions from burning waste, nor the impacts of spreading manure on fields.

We won’t stand by and let this cruelty take place. 

For people, planet and animals, this approval needs to be overturned. 

Together, we can reverse the decision. Our lawyers found serious flaws in the Council's decision. We started legal action to stop the suffering.

Rather than admit its errors, the Council has now doubled down and indicated that it will fight us all the way to the High Court.

Fighting for chicks in the High Court

We need to be ready for this battle. 

Winning this case will spare millions of chicks from suffering and could help make animal welfare a key consideration for councils across the country.
