Devastated by floods: help hold misleading insurers to account
Insurance companies are denying rightful payments by finding obscure loopholes in the policy wording. It happened to my family after a devastating flood and it could be happen to others in South Yorkshire right now.
My name is Mark Jenkins, a married man with 2 young children.
I am aiming to raise awareness to the pitfalls in home insurance, after my home was hit by flooding two years ago from a blocked culvert uphill behind our street. The claim is still not settled.
Soon after the flood the insurers agreed to stripping out my home, along with many of my neighbours, in preparation for repairs. Only after the contents had been taken away and disposed of did the insurer use a loop hole in the policy to deny our claim. It found our proximity to a river, several hundred feet below in the valley, enabled it to decline our claim and refused to pay.
The whole local area was affected. Out of 47 homes that suffered damage, our insurance company is the only to refuse to pay.
We have found that this insurer seems to adopt aggressive non-payment as an everyday business practice, leaving families like mine to pick up the pieces. Please help us get justice and change how the insurance system works by contributing what you can to our costs and sharing this page with your friends, family and on social media.
We are looking to share our story as I am sure my family is not the only one suffering at the hands of an insurance company.
What are we trying to achieve?
We are hoping to raise between £2.5k - £5k, to allow my professional team to challenge our insurer and if necessary to get this in front of the courts.
At the same time we want to raise the awareness of the public to the dangers of buying insurance without advice; as I did, in the belief that I would be saving money. It is simply not true and my wife and children have now suffered far too long as a consequence.
We have discovered to our cost that there are serious flaws with how insurance policies are sold, often misleadingly; and we need to test whether this case, and many others of a similar kind, would be seen by a court as unfair and unreasonable to the public.
How much we are raising and why?
Our minimum target will be £2.5k and my stretch target will be £5k.
This will be sufficient to get the case properly prepared and to challenge the insurer by a professional team who will thereafter be able to pursue it thereafter.
