On October 31st 2018, Extinction Rebellion declared an open rebellion against the British government for its failure to inform and protect its citizens from the approaching climate and ecological catastrophe.

Ordinary people occupied five bridges across the Thames in central London, spray-chalked government buildings, staged a funeral procession in Parliament Square and over 10 days in April, occupied 5 key sites across the city. It was the greatest collective act of non-violent direct action this country has ever seen.

Among these rebels were over 1000 people who chose to put their freedom on the line by remaining peacefully at the sites after orders were issued to vacate. Of these almost all – mums, dads, sisters, aunties, granddads - will be facing charges and the majority will go to trial.

This is where you come in.

Extinction Rebellion action is proving effective, but as the fight is taken to the courts our legal costs are already substantial.

We need your help to create a central Extinction Rebellion fighting fund. To cover legal fees in longer or more complex cases, to appeal verdicts and sentences to help protect the rights of future rebels, and to act as a safety net for rebels whose local group fundraising needs support.

Please donate anything you can, and share this page widely with your friends, family and on social media.

Why this is an emergency

It can be difficult to comprehend, but the world’s leading scientists have given us less than 12 years, and many of them as little as 5, to avert a worldwide climate and ecological catastrophe.

Without rapid, radical changes to the global systems we’ve created, we face devastating floods, wildfires, extreme weather, crop failure, mass displacement and the breakdown of society into something we will not recognise.

Despite this, our governments are still not acting. They are not telling us about the situation we are in, or putting in place a plan with anything close to the urgency or scale needed.

When a government neglects to protect its citizens, it is not just a citizen’s right to rebel but, many would argue, their duty. As time runs out, we are left with just one option: only a peaceful, planet-wide mobilisation will save us now.
