Stand with Reginald D. Hunter 🎤 – Stand up against the Israel lobby’s private prosecution of a comedian for jokes on Twitter
1. Who is being prosecuted?
Legendary comedian and satirist Reginald D. Hunter faces a private prosecution brought by the Campaign Against Antisemitism (CAA), a pro-Israel lobby group now acting as a private prosecutor.
On 11 August 2024, Reginald performed a joke he had previously performed. In his classic style, he had also criticised Israel.
A couple (whom it later transpired were associated with both the CAA and Israel’s Likud party) stood up in protest.
After this and misreporting of the incident, Reginald was targeted online. He was targeted by hate mail and death threats. One of those death threats to his agents read “drop the nigga by Christmas or you will be dead.”
Amidst this, Reginald confronted the CAA for spreading misinformation. He did so with satirical and provocative replies.
The CAA have now dragged Reginald to court on charges for three offences under Section 127 of the Communications Act 2003.
This marks one of the first instances of the CAA has used a private prosecution against a high-profile comedian. This also marks a stark example of private prosecution powers being used for political purposes and to stifle dissent and satire.
2. Why does it matter?
This is a warning shot to every artist, speaker, and dissenter who refuses to stay silent on Palestine and is critical of Israel.
This is a targeted assault on freedom of expression, solidarity work, and artistic dissent.
With an ongoing genocide in Gaza, we need more voices, not fewer.
No public prosecutor brought this case. The State did not pursue charges. Yet the CAA is forcing it through the courts.
3. How can you support?
Reginald will fight this all the way.
The support fund will assist with specialist counsel, and any appeals procedures and court fees that may be required.

Thank you all again for the overwhelming support and kindness shown.
Here is our first update straight from Westminster Magistrates' Court!
Reginald has just had his first hearing today. This was a short hearing, to make directions for an application by Reginald's legal team to quash the summons and stay proceedings as an abuse of process.
The court was told that, "Mr Hunter is an award-winning comedian, based in the UK. Following a show in August 2024, he was targeted, harassed, abused online, faced death threats, and responded to these online in distress. The Private Prosecutor is the CAA. The CAA applied for an ex parte summons, which was granted. This means the judge did not have the opportunity to scrutinise claims by the CAA in the absence of compliance with the duty of candour or receive representations from Mr Hunter.
In addition, "Pending full disclosure, the Defence will seek to apply to quash this summons and to stay these proceedings as an abuse of process."
The Court made the following directions:
- By 14 August 2025, the Private Prosecutor must disclose all documents, communications, and material put before the Court to apply for this summons, and any relevant communications thereof.
- By 14 August 2025, the Private Prosecutor must provide all relevant disclosure that may assist the Defence in its application, including disclosure relevant to the issues raised by the Defence.
- By 21 September 2025, the Defence to serve a skeleton argument in support of their application to quash summons and / or stay proceedings as an abuse of the Court’s process.
- By 20 October 2025, the Private Prosecutor to respond.
A full day hearing is now fixed on 14 November 2025. This is a public and open hearing.
