Climate change - the news is terrible. But there is action we can take together that will make a difference. 

Globally, we have to cut our carbon dioxide emissions by a whopping 45 percent within 11 years if we are to keep global average temperature increase below 1.5°C. Most global warming has taken place - unbelievably - in the past 35 years. The five warmest years on record have all been since 2010.

We’re going to fry or drown or both – unless we curb our emissions through drastic changes. 

For quick and effective change now, we need government action and leadership – locally and nationally. National government action currently seems unlikely.

The New Weather Institute and progressive legal firm Leigh Day have a suggestion: rather than wait for legislation at a national level, forcing local authorities to consider climate impact is a faster, stronger and potentially more effective weapon at this time, than anything else available.

More than a third of our economy is in the public sector. We know that if there was a public duty on local authorities to consider the climate impact of everything they do, the impact on our air, fossil fuel use, transport, housing and wildlife would be enormous.

Our Legal Challenge

So, we’re trying for a new common law - the Public Sector Climate Duty. 

We’re taking a local authority to court to test the basis for this new duty. It would mirror the effective and successful Public Sector Equality Duty which since 2010 has transformed the fight against discrimination and inequality in public sector decision making.

We’re launching this campaign because we have to do something, and fast. 

We need pledges of financial support which would protect the New Weather Institute from costs (capped at £10,000). We can't do this without your help!
