Challenge Lambeth’s decision on the commercial events in Brockwell Park

This challenge is about protecting Brockwell Park by trying to ensure events are run lawfully and in a way that respects and prioritises its landscape, ecology and local community. PBP is not against all events, but the current model - large-scale, repeated commercial use with long enclosures - is not sustainable.

Thanks to your fantastic support, we won two judicial reviews last year. Lambeth Council was twice ruled to have acted unlawfully in approving the commercial events and Brockwell Live was forced to get full planning permission. This was a landmark result of national significance.

Leading barristers advise that this planning permission, too, was improperly granted. The park is strongly protected under national policy, particularly in its value as public open space, but this was not taken seriously in the planning decision, there was missing evidence, and the Council relied on vague environmental assurances.

If this goes unchallenged, Brockwell Park faces the same pattern again - including exclusion of the public from large areas for over a month, ongoing and cumulative damage to grass, trees and wildlife, and repeated enclosure for large commercial events.

Even though we won costs in both previous challenges, those awards did not cover all legal expenditure. Campaign funds were also used to commission expert reports and submit a full objection to the planning application. The Open Spaces Society, Britain’s oldest national conservation body, has already put a grant on the table - but your help is still really needed to take this next step.
