Justice Beat: from activists to Alex Salmond

Justice Beat

The CrowdJustice Team

posted on 31 Aug 2018

This week on CrowdJustice, Women’s Aid and Rape Crisis UK are seeking support to help overturn the two child tax credit limit, a group of UK citizens is seeking to overturn the outcome of the Brexit vote, and charity and paralympians are crowdfunding to fight disability discrimination on public transport.

Tools for activists

Celebrated anarchist Barrett Brown has launched a fully encrypted internet platform designed to help other transparency activists, writes Courthouse News. “We are going to show journalists how easy it is to file FOIA claims, to get prison grievance forms that are filed that they can use to identify problem areas, and identify stories,” he said.

Legal crowdfunding

Alex Salmond has been in the news today with criticism for a crowdfunding campaign that appears to be for a judicial review of the Scottish government. In the absence of any verification or compliance mechanisms, we’re hoping he doesn’t tar legal crowdfunding with a single brush.

On the other side of the pond, an interesting range of public figures are taking crowdfunding platforms to take the fight to President Trump. On Tuesday, Vox reported upon the latest thorn in Trump’s heel, Michael Cohen, is now crowdfunding for a “truth fund.  The success of Michael Cohen’s so-called truth fund comes in the wake of Stormy Daniels’ similar crowdfunding push which has raised almost $600,00 since being launched in March.

Campaigners v the Home Office

Campaigners have started legal proceedings against the government over new laws that prevent EU citizens settled in the UK from accessing their Home Office records, writes the Guardian. Campaign group the 3million previously crowdfunded on CrowdJustice to enable them to issue the judicial review.
