Help me stop damaging attitudes towards women and girls by stopping the spread of strip clubs

My Council has just decided there should be no limit on strip club numbers and I need to make them re-think this decision because of the devastating impact these clubs have on attitudes to women and girls.

I need your help to get the case off the ground. £5,000 will enable me to start a legal challenge to get a court to rule on whether the Council has breached the Equality Act. I think it has because the Council hasn’t taken into account the impact these clubs have on women and girls and men’s attitudes towards them.

About Me

I'm a 54 year old Grandma. With 5 grandkids. A Lifelong Feminist. And Proud Sheffielder. I refuse to be cowed by the City Council and allow them to 'OK' the sexual objectification of our girls. Because we will never have #Times Up or an end to ‘President’s Club’ attitudes when men can buy women as sexual entertainment at Strip Clubs.

I am thrilled to be supported by pressure group Not Buying It as this is a pretty daunting thing for an individual to take on!

About my Council

My Council has decided that there should be no limit on strip clubs despite fierce opposition from local residents and human rights groups. The Council has already allowed one club in the cultural centre of the city, in amongst student accommodation and the student union, next to services for vulnerable users.

This is despite increasing opposition each year its licence is renewed. And despite  women and vulnerable groups repeatedly telling the Council they feel so unsafe and unwelcome they have had to find new routes into work, cannot use local LGBT or youth centres and have even given up working at nearby premises.

With no limit on the number of clubs heaven knows what my Council will do next!

The Wider Implications

This case affects you wherever you are. A decision in Sheffield has implications for the whole of the UK, as the powerful strip industry closely follows any initiatives that help it proliferate.

What Funding will do

I only need £5,000 to get the case off the ground. This will allow me to start a legal challenge to get a court to rule on whether the Council has breached the Equality Act.  If successful, it sends a very clear message to the entire strip industry.

Outrageous Arguments used to justify Strip Clubs!

These are some of the outrageous arguments being put forward by Sheffield City Council to justify NO LIMIT on strip clubs.

They are also claiming outrageous costs that Irene, the Sheffield gran who is taking them to court, will be liable for if the judge at this first stage of proceedings does not give her permission to take the case further to Judicial Review.

The Council is also now being supported by a barrister who represents strip clubs across the UK! So a decision in Sheffield has huge ramifications for the industry across the country.

The judge is looking at the case very soon. We hope he will be as outraged as us and give Irene permission to go ahead with this important legal challenge but if he doesn't, she could be liable for £1,000s in costs. We’ve got most of it covered thanks to all your amazing support but we want to make absolutely sure there's enough in the pot for this first stage.

So please donate today to help us reach the £7,5000 'stretch' target!
