Save the M32 Maples
Save the M32 Maples
On a quiet Sunday after the St Werburghs fair a group of men sneaked into Lower Ashley Road and, without any skill or health & safety, started hacking down the large Norway Maple trees there. Local people confronted them and they were stopped in the short term. Since then a campaign has started to try to save these trees, and to make sure Bristol City Council knows the importance of street trees in filtering out air pollution, at a time that toxic air pollution levels are killing 300 people a year in the city. Nearly 3000 people have already signed a petition. Please add your name (https://www.change.org/p/mayor-and-council-of-bristol-city-emergency-tree-protection-orders-for-all-bristol-city-trees?recruiter=922332580&utm_source=share_petition&utm_medium=facebook&utm_campaign=petition_dashboard&fbclid=IwAR3qoyyyf0VhwAEXbiQACw4TvCvfViXeV6Jz7228y4Q-JYtSNbltIF_LKGQ ) asking for these trees to be protected and for the council to make massive tree planting part of the strategy to improve our air. The London firm of Harrison Grant is giving the campaign group preferential terms but we need to raise £1000 to pay for the legal advice needed to take on the landowner and push Bristol City Council to do the right thing.
We need to send legal letters and hope you can help to make this campaign a success. Unbelievably there have still been men lurking by the trees over the past few days waiting for the chance to chop down them down.
Like Extinction Rebellion, and thousands throughout the UK, who accept rather than deny climate emergency, we intend to argue effectively, using the law, and visible protest, that developers’ dreams of cutting down more mature trees is now hopelessly out of date. Many boasts of so-called "affordable" housing is but a smokescreen for developers to shove plans through, and then count on the weak Planning Department not to crack down on them.
Today's pending letter alone will cost £150 plus VAT, and the first one did succeed in buying a bit of time. This next one is cutting edge, detailed, challenging the Planning Enforcement failure to protect the public, failure to guarantee protection for the trees until at least 15th August when a further planning decision is made. More legal persistence is essential, coupled with visible, cross-party action.
With the help of your individual pledges, large, or small, we feel confident that will tackle this landowner, save the maples and set a precedent for a radical shakeup of obsolete tree policy as a form of health promotion.
Please sign our petition, follow our FB page (https://www.facebook.com/groups/349790998994481/) , and meet us on Lower Ashley Road for St. Paul's Carnival on 6th July. Show that Bristol really can be the Green Capital rather than the Greed Capital of the UK.
Thank you in advance for your help, which is for all of our children and those suffering immediate damage from unchecked development, with no proper consultation.
Peace, love and sweet maple thanks for any and all help.
