The Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy has given developers consent to blight one of the most beautiful and historic landscapes of north Wales with 11 miles (17 kilometres) of high-voltage overhead lines and heavy duty pylons.

We are the Pylon the Pressure Group, and have won the right to a Judicial Review which could overturn that consent.

Our case

SP Manweb (a Scottish Power/Iberdrola company) are set to install an 11 mile (17km) high voltage line suspended on 15m high double pole structures across a rural landscape to connect a wind farm being built in beautiful Clocaenog Forest, North Wales to a sub-station at St Asaph. The wind farm operators are energy giant RWE and another overseas energy corporation.

This site is part of the Vale of Clwyd, celebrated for centuries in poetry and prose. Its beauty, and that of the more elevated areas leading down to it, will be spoiled forever, as will two exceptional Grade II* listed buildings. These are beautiful, precious and much-loved landscapes which have formed the histories and identities of their local communities over generations.

Why this case matters – nationally as well as locally

Of course everyone wants renewables. But every large wind or solar farm needs a high-voltage connection to the National Grid. That connection can be either underground cables or overhead lines. Underground cables are invisible whereas overhead lines and their structures scar the countryside permanently.

We do not oppose wind farms. But we object strongly to overhead lines, when undergrounding is entirely feasible and affordable. Over the lifetime of the connection, underground cabling costs no more than overhead.  SP Manweb and the Secretary of State say the harm is worth it to save money. We say it most certainly is not. That’s why we have mounted a legal challenge to the decision.

The case has national significance and is being followed closely by other utilities companies and their legal advisers, since any electricity generation scheme, whether wind, solar or other, must have its high-voltage connection. Failure to win the Judicial Review would make it easier for developers to disregard legislation that currently protects our countryside and our national heritages, wherever they are in the UK.

How you can help

We are raising funds to pay for the Judicial Review which could prevent this from going ahead. Group members have already raised a substantial amount themselves, but at least £5,000 and very likely £10,000 more is needed to fully fund our legal challenge.

Please donate to help us fight this injustice - it is essential to get the decision overturned!

IA I DANDDAEARU GWIFRAU, NA I BEILONAU!

Mae’r Ysgrifennydd Gwladol dros Busnes, Egni a Strategaeth Diwydiant yn Llundain wedi rhoi caniatâd i ddatblygwyr ddifetha harddwch un o rannau mwyaf hyfryd a hanesyddol gogledd Cymru gyda 11 filltir (17km) o wifrau trydan a pheilonau mawr.

Enillodd ein grŵp Pwysau ar y Peilonau yr hawl i gael Adolygiad Barnwrol i geisio gwrthdroi y caniatâd.

 Ein achos

SP Manweb (cwmni Scottish Power/Iberdrola) sydd wedi cael y caniatâd i adeiladu linell drydan ar bolion dwbl 15m o uchder ar draws gwlad gogledd Cymru i gysylltu fferm wynt yn Clocaenog gyda’r rhwydwaith trydan genedlaethol yn is-orsaf Llanelwy 11 filltir (17km) i ffwrdd. Datblygwyr y fferm wynt yw RWE a chwmni egni arall o dramor.

Mae’r ardal hon yn ran o Ddyffryn Clwyd, enwog am ganrifoedd o farddoniaeth a cherdd. Bydd ei harddwch yn ogystal a golygfeydd o ochrau’r mynydd-dir i lawr yn cael ei difetha am byth. Hefyd, bydd dau adeilad rhestredig II* hynod, yn ogystal a llawer o gartrefi, yn cael eu amharu. Y cynefin yma a'i hanes sydd wedi ffurfio’r cymeriad unigryw y gymuned lleol.

Pam fod yr achos yma yn bwysig?

Er bod fawr angen egni adnewyddadwy, mae pob fferm wynt neu fferm ynni-haul angen eu cysylltu i’r rhwydwaith trydan genedlaethol. Mae dewis gan y datblygwyr i roi y gwifrau hyn dros beilonau neu o dan ddaear. ‘Rydym yn annog i’r gwifrau gael eu rhoi o dan ddaear er mwyn atal y difrod i amglychedd a chefn gwlad gogledd Cymru.

Does dim gwrthwynebiad gennym tuag at ffermydd gwynt ond mae gennym wrthwynebiad cryf i roi gwifrau trydan uwchben y ddaear ar beilonau mawr, yn enwedig am fod tanddaearu yn hawdd a fforddiadwy. Bydd tanddaearu yn costio dim mwy na peilonau dros oes y lein.

Yn ei adroddiad awgrymodd yr Ysgrifennydd Gwladol fod unrhyw niwed o gael peilonau ar draws y wlad yn werth yr arian fydd yn cael ei arbed gan y cwmni egni. ‘Rydym yn anghytuno yn llwyr a dyma’r rheswm i gychwyn sialens gyfreithiol yn erbyn y penderfyniad.

Mae’r cais o bwysigrwydd genedlaethol a ddilynir yn ofalus gan amryw gwmnïau cyfleustodau a'u cynghorwyr cyfreithiol. Os collwn yr Adolygiad Barnwrol bydd yn haws i gwmnïau fel hyn anwybyddu deddfwriaeth sydd yn diogelu cefn gwlad a’n etifeddiaeth yn unrhyw le ym Mhrydain.

 Sut y gallwch helpu

Bydd pob ceiniog a godwyd yn mynd i dalu costau cyfreithiol am yr Arolygiad Barnwrol i atal y cynllun peilonau. Mae aelodau lleol eisioes wedi codi swm helaeth ond bydd angen swm ychwanegol o £5,000 neu fwy na thebyg £10,000 i fod yn sicr o ariannu’r achos.

Cyfranwch os gwelwch yn dda i frwydro’r anghyfiawnder yma – mae’n holl bwysig i ni wrthdroi y penderfyniad.

 Amdanom ni

Mae aelodau ein grŵp yn dod o gymunedau bach lleol, o ffermydd a chartrefi ar hyd 11 filltir o lwybr y lein. Bydd bywydau llawer yn cael eu newid yn llwyr gan beilonau a lein drydan yn mynd heibio eu tai a'u ffermydd.  ‘Rydym wedi ymgyrchu dros dwy flynedd i gael ein danddaearu y ‘Cysylltiad Ffermydd Gwynt Gogledd Cymru’.
