Mark Bessner is a hardworking husband, loving father and, former Michigan State Trooper. Today, he is in a fight for his personal freedom. While on-duty and patrolling the east side of Detroit, one of the most violent areas in the country, Mark and his partner attempted to make a traffic stop of an all-terrain vehicle. The driver of the ATV failed to pull over and the troopers pursued the fleeing vehicle. During the pursuit, Mark was forced to make a split-second decision; fearing for his life, he deployed his Taser. The ATV crashed and the driver suffered severe injury. Mark and his partner performed first aid but the ATV driver tragically succumbed to his injuries. Although Mark’s actions were justified and done in the line of duty, the prosecutor nevertheless charged Mark with murder. An excessively high bond of $1 million drained the resources of Mark's family and friends, leaving little to cover the mounting legal expenses necessary to prove Mark’s innocence. This is a man whose life has centered on family, community, commitment and service.
