Help me seek justice for my daughter Robyn, who took her own life after a sustained campaign of harassment and stalking. I need legal representation at her inquest in May, and cannot do this without you.

Who am I:

My name is Margie Winter. My daughter Robyn took her own life and her body was discovered on 14 August 2018, nine days before her 36th birthday.

Robyn's Story:

At the time of her death, Robyn was in temporary accommodation and was desperately trying to get away from her stalker in Horsham where she had lived for 10 years.  The unwanted attention from a new neighbour who lived in the same block of flats as Robyn started as harassment and soon turned to stalking as time progressed.

She did report this to her housing officer and eventually the police,  who were reluctant to intervene, as they saw this purely as a neighbours dispute.

However from then on the situation deteriorated.

Robyn decided to do a council house swap after her dog, Bruce, died from unknown causes on 5 August.  She continued to live in Horsham as she had established her life there and had some friends she could turn to when needed.  When the harassment and stalking continued in her new flat for a further 6 months, she had no choice but to move again.

At the same time she was studying Fine Art at London’s Metropolitan University but struggling because of the harassment, stalking and grief of losing her best friend, Bruce, her beloved white German Shepherd.

Though she had kept a diary of events and showed a 262 page statement to the police, the police felt there was not enough evidence to prosecute and her case was closed on 17 November 2017.

She decided to move back to Brighton, where we originally lived and she had a plan to enrol for her third year of University. She attempted to get temporary accommodation from Brighton and Hove City Council.

Her request was turned down three times and she turned to Citizen’s Advice Bureau for help.

With their assistance she acquired temporary accommodation but after four weeks in this she was threatened with eviction as the council did not see her as vulnerable.

She was having suicidal thoughts, and went into A&E department mid July begging to be admitted and knew without help, she would kill herself.  The A&E department decided she should return to her GP for help and they discharged her.

Four weeks later she was registered with a GP in Brighton who saw her and immediately diagnosed her with clinical depression and prescribed antidepressants. He asked her to come back and see him on 16 August.

Her body was found on 14 August at her temporary accommodation in Newhaven.

Robyn’s death could have been prevented had government agencies given more support to someone who had everything to live for.

Her piano teacher and good friend in Horsham wrote a long letter to me after her death  -  ‘ I think her courage over those years of intimidation was immense.  She kept trying to make her case, to stay safe and to carry on at uni, and work, and get her motorcycle licence and bike. It showed tremendous achievement and strength of character.

Why do I need your help?

Robyn’s final words on her Facebook page were ‘ there can be no peace without justice’.

This is why I’m seeking legal help today to fund a barrister’s presence at her inquest in Eastbourne on 9 May 2019.

Please help me seek justice for my daughter, and donate what you can. Please also take the time to share this page with your friends and family.
