I believe in equality for all, in and out of the work place. I stand against racism and sexism with the strong believe in order for change to happen you must stand up and speak against it.

My name is Mercedes Driscoll (nee Cobbing) and I worked for V & P Global Ltd from April 2019 to July 2019. V & P Global Ltd styles itself as the "leading legal search specialist" .

I have issued an employment tribunal case against V & P Global Ltd and Mr Varela (its director and founder)  for harassment because of racism and sexism.

The allegations I have made against V & P Global Ltd are:

i)   It had been raised by a colleague of mine that a client law firm was not diverse and therefore a particular candidate would not be a good cultural fit. Mr Varela  pointed at one partner  on that law firm's website (a person of colour) and said "you can't tell me that's just a good tan" . He then asked another colleagues' opinion whether that partner "just had a good sun tan".

ii) Mr Varela said that in Singapore "they put slaves in the cupboard". V & P Global Ltd have an office in Singapore.

iii) On another occasion, Mr Varela referred to a female partner V & P Global Ltd had recently placed at Druces LLP (a big law firm in London) as a "sassy minx" ( he was referring to her picture on the Druces LLP website).  Following this, he then repeatedly referred to V & P Global's female candidates as "sassy minxs" . I felt this was very derogatory towards the professional females V & P Global Ltd were trying to place and I believe this behavior should not be allowed in the 21st century workplace.

iv) On many occasions whilst I was working at V & P Global Ltd, Mr Varela would refer to candidates they were trying to place as being "on the spectrum" (a reference to the Autistic spectrum). I felt this was very derogatory towards both the candidate and people who were Autistic.

There is a Glassdoor review of V & P Global Ltd  labelled "An Objectively Hateful Experience"  https://www.glassdoor.co.uk/Overview/Working-at-V-and-P-Global-EI_IE3398382.11,25.htm

I am hoping to raise an initial £2,000 (with a stretch of £50,000) in order that I can pay legal fees to support me in my claim.  A legal team is expensive and without a team being successful is too difficult.

I brought a claim of "constructive harassment dismissal" but the Tribunal struck out this aspect of my claim in July 2020 because of two previous Employment Appeal Tribunal cases. Thankfully, my lawyers have been able to overturn this judgment in the Employment Appeal Tribunal.

I have already issued the claim and a trial of this matter will start on 19 July 2021 for 9 days.
