I am a student and mother of two young children. I am dyslexic. I am studying a Phd.  It has been a long journey to get here, and will take another few years to get to the end and create a brighter future for myself and my children. 

Since it take me longer to read, synthesis and organise my work, I opted for a part-time course, I put in 25 hrs a week at least, usually more. A part-time student is expected to put in 20 hrs a week on my type of course. With the additional study skills sessions I do officially 21 hrs per week, for more than 24 weeks per yr and my Phd is at a recognised educational establishment. 

The council state a full time student is someone who 

If you’re over 20 years old, then your course(s) must:

• last at least 24 weeks
• involve at least 21 hours study a week
• be at a recognised educational establishment

I believe the council should allow me a student exemption as I fulfil this criteria. This level of study is no mean feat. It takes dedication. By refusing this accommodation the council are not acknowledging my equal rights, and putting me at a great disadvantage to access education, as affordability of living costs as a student is a struggle when the actual amount of time I need to put into it, is full time hrs. I am able to get distinctions at this level, so I know I should continue.  

I am trying to raise £1300 to pay for court fees. This case has been supported by the Equalities human rights commission, and the laywer is prepared to do it for free because he is behind it - which is what has driven me to ask for your support. 

If I win, it will make a massive difference to people with learning difficulties who are trying to study and access education, it will set a precedent for councils to acknowledge the time it takes dyslexic learners and it may be the first step to shifting law in this area, as winning cases can be used as examples.
