Who am I?

My name's Cathy and I'm a first-year student at Lancaster University. Although I wholeheartedly support the lecturers' strikes, I feel that students are being treated unfairly. Like most other students, I have come to university to learn, and the idea of paying university fees for tuition, whilst not getting what you paid for, strikes me, and most other students, as unjust.

We've set up this page to try to rectify this, and to show that students are not to be reckoned with!

I'm fighting to hold the university authorities to account for their breach of contract with thousands of students.Together we have lost thousands of hours of teaching time that we have paid for. This campaign is not in opposition to striking lecturers. It is in support of students who have borne the brunt of a dispute that could have been resolved.

The Case:

We are working with campaigning law firm Leigh Day to file a Group Claim against Lancaster and other universities, demanding a refund of fees paid for lectures that students have had to miss during the lecturers' pension strikes.

This case has national implications. We need to work with students from other universities around the country to take legal action together.

Again, this case is not against lecturers in any way - it is simply a consumer law case seeking financial compensation for a service which was not provided.

How much are we raising and why?

Students need to band together to bring a National Group Claim and raise enough money to pay the court costs and the costs if we lose (nothing is certain). Initially, we're aiming to get to £30,000 but we want to raise as much as possible.

Money raised through crowdfunding will help students to get the case off the ground and bring the universities to account.

To be clear - Lancaster is not the only university affected. We intend to take this fight wherever students have been short-changed.

Students have already taken a big hit - they shouldn't have to take another one.

What difference will it make?

This case is about more than just pocket money for students. It is setting a precedent that if students are to be charged high fees for education, we deserve the same consumer rights given to anyone else.
